There are plenty of metered taxis available at King Shaka International Airport and on immediate arrival you face the risk of being bombarded by taxi touts. For the unseasoned traveller, this can be quite unpleasant, despite the best efforts of ACSA to control taxi touting inside the terminal building. Good negotiation skills are required to get the best taxi rates. Do not be impressed by taxi operators who stick to the metered rates since it is often possible to get a discount on meter rates, depending on your destination and the time of day. As a rough guide you should not have to pay more than about R250 for a trip to Umhlanga and R450 to the centre of Durban. Prices are for the trip and not per person. Pre-booking a taxi is a popular option as it overcomes taxi tout problems, having to negotiate a price on the spot and the need for local currency.
