Information about the new airport at La Mercy - Facts and Figures


  • Driven by the Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA) and the Dube Trade Port Company, established by National and Provincial Government, respectively.

  • The entire site consists of 2000 hectares and is the first green field airport commissioned by ACSA

  • 850 hectares are dedicated to the airport facility. The first phase completion in May 2010 will handle 7.5m passengers per annum, rising to 45m passenger capacity by 2060

  • The runway length is 3.7 kms and the total runway and taxiway size is the equivalent of 100 full size soccer pitches

  • The passenger terminals floor area including both domestic and international terminals will be equivalent to 27 full size soccer pitches

  • 6,500 sq m has been allocated to retail space in the terminals

  • An outdoor piazza will offer restaurants, pub and coffee shop plus indoor food court, banking hall and specialty stores

  • There will be parking spaces for 6,500 vehicles and 10 car hire concessions granted

  • 300 hectares will be reserved for the trade port operated by the Dube Trade Port company

  • There will be 10,000 sq m of cargo space with a dedicated terminal. There will be capacity to handle 100,000 tons of cargo per annum in 2010.

  • The remaining 850 hectares are dedicated to support zones to be released for the development of offices, business parks, restaurants, conference facilities and hotels
